Professor Clive Roberts FIET, FIRSE, Durham University
Clive Roberts is Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science at Durham University, a role he assumed in March 2024. He leads
a faculty comprising eight departments: Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, and Earth and Environment Sciences. Prior to joining Durham, he spent 27 years at the University of Birmingham, where he served as Head of the School of Engineering, Director of the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE), and Director of the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN).
His research focuses on improving the performance and resilience of transport systems using a systems engineering approach. He has expertise spanning complex systems simulation, digital twinning, sensing and data analysis, AI/ML, control systems, energy and sustainability, risk and safety, and cybersecurity. As a Fellow of the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (FIRSE), he has particular expertise in railway control systems, operations, power systems, and asset management.
Clive’s work has received significant recognition, including the Queen’s Anniversary Prize (2018) and multiple national innovation and knowledge exchange awards. He currently serves as Independent Chair of the Rail Safety and Standards Board National Rail Standards Committee, and is Founder and Chair of his spinout company MoniRail, which specialise in non-intrusive railway track condition monitoring.
